Students Find Spirituality in Nature

Students from Vincent Massey Collegiate in Rosemount and John F. Kennedy High School in St. Michel recently welcomed fall with an overnight camping experience at YMCA Camp Kanawana.

The VMC Green Club, composed of six students and their teacher, Rachel Thompson, as well as 13 students from John F. Kennedy High School spent two days in the shadow of Mont Saint Sauveur, learning about modern conservation and participating in team building activities.

“Allowing youth to experience the great outdoors and be part of nature is a wonderful experience that really allows them to be part of something spiritual and profound,” said Rocco Speranza, Spiritual and Community Animator. “Seeing the red tailed feathered hawk, then hearing its call or the tapping of the woodpecker, or hearing falling leaves as they tap other trees allows one to realize that they are all part of something inspiring and sacred in nature. Once students experience this, they will truly work hard to preserve this beauty for future generations.”

The students also took time to plan community based conservation action projects that will be implemented this year. This trip also allowed all the students to make new friends, share ideas and work on projects aimed at appreciating and conserving nature.
